Our face is an integral part of who we are and who others see. Often, our life’s story, habits and genetics shape up our visages – and sometimes, we do not like what we see in the mirror. Fortunately, fillers, facelifts and laser treatments, a relative newcomer on the skincare scene, can help erase the blemishes a of time. Haute Beauty talked to Dr. Jhonny Salomon to learn more about the novel laser options he offers his clients.
Lasers for tightening the facial skin are a rather new technology. Tell us more about them and the procedures available?
The facial aging process should be categorized into three different areas of focus: loss of laxity, loss of volume and changes in skin texture. As we age, the intensity of these changes vary and over time become more noticeable. While there are many non-invasive procedures that can pause the aging process, there are few that can truly reverse the signs of aging to the extent that a Facelift procedure can. Of the non-invasive procedures, I would say that Thermage CPT and ThermiSmooth offer excellent results with improving the loss of laxity in ones skin. Both procedures offer excellent results for tightening the skin with little to no downtime. Procedures such as CO2 laser treatments and Fraxel are used for addressing skin changes that occur with aging. These procedures work to smooth scars, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and correct damage caused by excessive sun exposure. To address the loss of volume, I prefer the use of fat grafting and fillers as they allow for the most natural and subtle results.
How do lasers work in tightening the skin?
Thermi Smooth and Thermage CPT are not lasers per se as they use radiofrequency technology to tighten the skin by targeting the deep layer of skin called the sub dermis. This stimulates the body to begin the natural production of collagen resulting in a tighter, more supple and youthful appearance.
What considerations should patients and surgeons take into account when considering laser treatment? Are there any cases where they cannot be used?
There are many factors to consider prior to using a laser treatment to address the signs of facial aging. Patients who have taken medications such as Acutane should refrain from any laser treatments for at least six months after completing the cycle. Additionally, any patients who have recently been exposed to excessive sun or are on antibiotics should also refrain from laser treatments as their skin is much more sensitive to heat during this time.
What are the advantages of using lasers compared to fillers?
Lasers and fillers address separate concerns and work in conjunction with one another. Lasers address the loss of laxity while fillers address the loss of volume. Very often I use both procedures together to provide patients with the most natural results.
How long does it take for the facelift-laser results to set in? How long do they last?
Thermage CPT can show some immediate results, but the full results set in within about six months. During this time, your body begins to naturally produce collagen, which leads to long lasting results.
What do you feel is most important for patients to take into consideration when choosing the treatment best for them?
It’s important that individuals understand the full spectrum of pros and cons associated with the treatment plan they’re considering. Having realistic expectations and working together with your surgeon to select the treatment best suited for the results you’re seeking is very important. While a non invasive approach can be appealing, it may not always be the best option for achieving the results you desire and it’s important that you discuss your expectations with your surgeon.
