The Neck Lift Procedure
For many, the first signs of aging show itself most prominently in the neck. Additionally, people who have recently lost weight may have to deal with a loose, baggy accumulation of skin around the neck. A neck lift can dramatically aid in restoring the neck to its ideal shape. Neck lifts vary depending upon the patient and their individual needs as the procedure can include a combination of liposuction, cervicoplasty, or platysmaplasty. Liposuction is typically utilized to remove fat, while cervicoplasty aids in the reducing excess skin, and platysmaplasty works to get rid of band lines while tightening existing neck muscles. The neck lift procedure is revolutionary in that there is no ideal candidate for surgery – individuals of all ages are able to benefit immensely from the surgery.
Liposuction is typically performed first while in surgery. Initially, an incision will be made directly below the chin as a means to remove any excess or lingering fat. A tube will then be inserted into the skin, breaking up the fat as a result, and discarding it from the neck. Patients will be bandaged temporarily to alleviate any discomfort, but this can typically be removed after one day following surgery. Swelling will only be prominent in the neck, jaw, or ears for 5-7 days. The final results will present themselves within three to six months.
With the cervicoplasty procedure, an incision is made directly below the chin and also usually behind the ears as well. The surgeon will proceed by essentially lifting the skin and holding it down with either permanent sutures or a form of permanent adhesive. Recovery for this procedure is very similar to that of liposuction, with the use of an elastic bandage secured around the neck and head to reduce pain and keep the neck in place.
Platysmaplasty surgery is performed as a means of reducing band lines around the neck – incisions will be made in the same places as liposuction and cervicoplasty procedures. The surgeon will place a small instrument inside the incision to remove particular neck muscles or to restructure them, resulting in a tightening of the neck muscles. In order to keep the muscles clasped in their proper position, parts of the muscles will be permanently sutured. A bandage will then be applied around the neck and head and recovery guidelines will be the same as those for liposuction and cervicoplasty.
Following surgery, patients may have mild numbness and minor bruising on the skin surrounding the incision site. However, it is very unlikely that patients will experience any major physical impairments.
