Surgical Spotlight | Otoplasty

Ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, is a surgical procedure intended to correct defects in the ear structure that are present at birth or caused by injury. A skilled surgeon is able to improve the shape, position, and proportion of the ear while bringing balance to the face. Patients typically choose otoplasty to correct overly large ears, protruding ears of one or both sides, or deformities such as “cauliflower ear” that is caused from injury.

The procedure itself is done through a small incision made just behind the ear within the natural fold in which the ear connects to the head. Depending on the specific needs of the patient, the surgeon may remove small amounts of skin and cartilage or use sutures to hold the cartilage in a more desirable place. Once the necessary adjustments have been made, the surgeon will close the incision and apply soft dressings to the treated area.

Patients may feel some mild discomfort in the days following surgery and may find it difficult to sleep if they have a preference of sleeping on their side. This discomfort will generally subside within 1-2 weeks. Otoplasty is a minor procedure that can provide drastic changes resulting in an increase in self-esteem.
